Representation of sex in the media for mock exam

Positive representation of women:
The film 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' has a female lead, Jennifer Lawrence who in herself is a role model and is a positive person in the media. This films has broken records in America. This made Jennifer Lawrence  an Oscar award winner, 'Golden Globe nominee. She took home the Academy Award for best actress in February 2013.'- http://www.biography.com/people/jennifer-lawrence-20939797

Negative representation of women:
Ke$ha has recently released  a new video for her song 'Dirty Love'. In this video she plays a stripper, and she Daily Mail stated 'Ke$ha leaves little to the imagination as she appears in a red spotlight wearing black fishnets and garters, and a flimsy white T-shirt that she rips off to reveal a black bra and panties.' She is doing this to appeal to a wider audience because the video is mainly for the msle viewers because the song has no reference to being a stripper just that she wants to have sex not a relationship. By parading around in barely any clothes is just to get the men interested.
This is the link to where I got my information from:

Get ready: Ke$ha is about to begin her striptease during which she peels off her grunge clothing one piece at a time

Positive representation of men:

Negative representation of men:
Julian Morris has sexualised himself for 'Wonderland Magazine' where is has nothing but a towel to hide his modesty. This is mainly for the women that will find him attractive and get pleasure out off seeing something like this.

Representation of women- Cagney and Lacey (taxi cab murders)

The women in this show are shown as strong independent women who can handle themselves. They had a job that would mainly be seen as a man's job in those times, they were police officers. This breaks the trend of the women needing protection from the big bad world because they are going out there to protect others. They don't wear girly outfits they are mainly dressed like a man, a tom boy. Later on in the show the audience is shown that one of the women is a mother and a wife, the husband is having an argument about her job and she sticks up for herself, this is different to many other shows of its time because men were seen as the dominant one in a household. They are intelligent because they are solving the case themselves.

The Stalker: The Second Offence poster

This is my second film poster. The idea is that he is holding the picture of the main girl from the previous film to show that this stalker has unfinished business with her. He is holding a Polaroid of her because that is the theme through out the films it also creates sense of a mug shot of her. She is looking behind in the picture to show that she is watching her back this time because she knows that he is after her, but also because she is looking at him in this poster.

The Stalker 1st poster

This is my first poster for 'The Stalker'. It took a lot of time because I took all the picture in the polaroids myself, so all the pictures and editing and scaling were done by me it is took time to collect them all, edit them all and scale, place and tilt to make them look all good. Then I changed the brightness of them all to make them look more dark, while I was doing this half of my polaroids had a grey box around them so I had to do them again. Then I changed the background to black to make this whole poster more dark. The main image I took in the studio make made it look dark by editing it with brightness. I am proud of what I have achieved by there is something I wished I did differently to make this look even better.

My progress on my coursework

I have started collecting my pictures for the background of polariods. I have started on the background of my first one and it is looking good so far. A huge Thank You goes out to my friend Katie who took the time to let me stalk her around town and at my house. I have also booked some studio time to take my main images for both of my pre-productions and double page spread.

Double Page Spread

Most of the double page spreads have a strong image of the actors either in a scene from the film or just together to making them look like they get along with them. Then there is a lot of text about the film and the actors. Because I am doing a horror film poster I have to do a good double page spread which goes well with the poster I have created. Looking at the Empire magazines in lesson I like "The Exorcist" double page spread because the colour was red and looks amazing, this will go well with my poster because it can be taken in 'The Dark Room'. I think this is effective because the colour conotates danger, passion and blood which is everything in my idea of my film which I am doing my poster on. By having white writing it makes it stand out but also to me it make the red more dark and inposing. I could have the leading lady on the floor of 'the dark room' and she can look really scared, also if I can pull it off I could also add part of the man in the image to show what she is scared off. I wont show his face because then it will still remain a mystery.
My inspiration:

These are some images that are similar to my idea:

My progress in the Coursework 2

I have created my ideas the first and second a couple of times so I know what I am doing. I have received help to to make my ideas come alive. I am really excited about this but I am also pulling y hair out because of photoshop and the thought of my idea going in the wrong direction than I wanted and it looking terrible.
These are my ideas :

They don't look brilliant but once i have my own images and help with filters and such they will look better. I could only work with what I had at the time.
The idea I have for the first one is, the background is images of the woman like he has taken pictures of her in her daily life like a real stalker. Then the man is in front of that, he is in a hoodie so he remains a mystery to the audience and he is her shadow. Then the woman is in front of the man and she will look terrified and there is a hand over her mouth as if she is being dragged into this man's liar of her. I have the text as a type writer text to give the sense of a criminal form.
The idea I have for the second poster is the man is holding a Polaroid that he has taken himself and then the woman in the picture is the lady he is stalking and she will be looking behind as if she is looking at him.
I got my first idea from 'The Tall Man' and 'The Apparition' posters because I liked how the man standing behind the woman in 'The Tall Man' was so eye catching because I wanted to know why you couldn't see his face and why he was standing behind this woman, then the hand holding the woman in 'The Apparition' looked amazing how they were covering her mouth so she could scream for help and how they were making her feel helpless by casing/cocooning her in so many hands.

My progress on my coursework.

I have finished all the analysis work and I have chosen to do a Horror film poster because I believe that there is a lot I could do with it and I have a lot of ideas. I have come up with my final idea which I have put a lot of thought into and really enjoy the idea I have come up with. I have designed an idea of what I want the poster to look like. I have also carried out a survey on survey monkey and that has also conformed that I should do a horror film poster because more people go to the cinema to watch horror films. I have also managed to get a girl to take part in helping me with my coursework, she has to be the girl (victim) on my poster.

Similarities in film posters

Teen comedy:
on teen comedy posters they mainly have a strong image of the main character set apart from the other cast members to show the audience that is their story. The image is strong because it tells the audience a lot about the film and what has happened in it. The images are funny because either they are dressed funny or are pulling a funny face to tell the audience that they will laugh while watching this film.

Horror:
In horror posters there is mainly a victim on the front to show the audience that they are the main character. The image is dark to show that the story line is dark and may scare the audience.

My Coursework 2

In action posters they all have the same sort of theme going on for example, the main character is usually a man and they are usually covered in blood or dirt. This gives the audience the knowledge that before this point they have been in big battle and got hurt but they are still soldiering on for the end cause. But some films do brake this guidelines a bit for example 'Salt', 'laura croft' and 'hanna' and these are just some of them. Action films are mainly beaten up men because then it is relatable for there chosen audience, men like to feel strong and like they can take on a whole army of ninjas and still get up for more.
Like in the other I have shown the posters and mainly the same.

Taken 2 analysis:

In this picture they have used the colour red to show that there is a theme of danger in this film and maybe some blood shed. Also the camera angle is looking up at him showing his power in this film. He is wearing black so maybe that tells the audience about what he is like, maybe he has a job where wearing black is like the uniform. He is holding a gun and likes professional with it so maybe he works with guns, police officer and secret agent. It also show that there will be some fight scenes and shooting scenes. The slogan states that they are coming for him this time which shows that there is a story before this one, this kind of thing has happened to him before. It grips the audience because they will want to know what is going to happen to this man. The background is obviously important because it is being shown in this poster, so it is showing the audience where this film is taking place. There are sparks on the bottom of the poster to show that maybe he blows things up in the film to create these sparks.

In comedy posters they try and have a comedic photo on it to make it eye catching for the audience. They do this to show the audience just how funny the whole film will be. It doesn't really matter what gender is present on the poster because comedy appeals to everyone as long as it is funny. Also depending on the story and what funny thing happen in it will result in what the poster looks like.

21 Jump Street analysis:
In this poster the actors a wearing matching suits which is funny because cool teenager wouldn't wear the same suit as their brother or best friend. They are both carrying guns which show that maybe they are not as young as they are trying to be or maybe they are under cover which is supported by the slogan which is funny as well because is dirty and takes the mick out of american teenage boys. The stereotype of American teenage boys are that they want to 'get laid' on their prom night with their prom date so having the slogan as a play on words which is only slightly bringing up that subject is funny. The use of red in the title shows that there might be some danger in this film. The background is like the back drop where they get their picture taken at prom which is effective because then it is relatable for the viewers in America, and relatable for all ages.

In family film posters they just show the characters in the films and don't give to much away. They make the characters look attractive to children and even teenagers. They use bright colours to catch the eye of their target audience.

Dark Shadows analysis:
In this poster they show what the characters are through there colours, for example the main character position in the front of the group is wearing old clothes but looks quite wealthy, maybe a duke. He has a huge jewel around his neck to show that he is actually rich. He is really white like he is dead and the life is drained out of him, he is a vampire. The lady dress in red shows that she is the bad person in the film because the colour red goes with danger. The little boy is wearing blue maybe this shows that he is sad about something. The bright colours show that this film is for children because of the bright gripping colours, bright orange hair and the purples.

In horror posters they mainly have a fearful leading lady who shows the audience that they are the victims. They also involved the villain somewhere on the poster but they are usual hidden in some way so the audience doesn't know to much about them.

Scream analysis:
In this poster they show the main character on the poster and she is the main focus. She is shocked so it make the audience interested because they want to know what has shocked her and also what might make her scream. The poster is in black and white to create a dark atmosphere but then her eyes are blue which draws attention to her, has she suffered? is she sad? They say your eyes are the windows to your soul, maybe this is telling the audience that the action of this film takes place in the night time. The slogan is saying about people who like horror films are the ones who are going to die so that will build a thrill in the audience and they will go and see the film because they will want to go and see what happens to them. This film will mainly be for young adult males because the fact that the main character is a weak woman being hunted by a strong man.

Like I said before in romance films they usually have a couples really close to each other and looking happy and relatable for the audience.

Love Actually analysis:
In this poster they have a red ribbon wrapping in between all the actors in the poster showing that maybe they are all joined together some how. Also the fact that it is gift wrapped shows the time that it is set, Christmas time. The red colour shows that this film is about love. I like how they actors are all linked like Bill Nighy is a laid back character which is shown through his clothes is 'punching' Rowan Atkinson which shows that maybe Rowan is an annoying character in this film and you can't help but want to hit him. Then Martine McCutcheon is looking up so it shows that maybe she is in love with someone who is above here (physical in the picture and in society). Also the next couple Emma Thompson is looking to the man next to her but she is looking down which shows that maybe she is embarrassed of the relationship she has, the man isn't even looking at her so that show that he doesn't love her. Then the rest of the poster are looking directly at the audience which creates a relationship with the audience.

My coursework

I hav chosen to do a film poster because I am passionate about films.
Action:
In these posters they have a team which shows that they have to a lot of action and they work well together. It also gives a sense of unity to the film which the audience will like because then they can relate to one of the characters in the film because there is more then one personality present. The audience to this film will be mainly men of all ages because they have all ages present in the film. Also they will be getting a group of friends attending because they want to share the good film with friends and it also shows through the poster that is is a group film, for example of this is 'The Avengers'. Everyone likes the film and you go with your friends to watch it and enjoy your favourite character. But there are also posters that show a strong character dominating the film and taking control of the story line. Behind this strong man is the rest of the story to show the audience what type of film is it, such as a si-fi film or a film set aboard.

Comedy:

In these posters they are simple so that makes it funny. They can attract any audience because the actors are middle aged so getting that audience interested in the film but then it will get the younger audience because the actual film is called 'The Hangover' which is would young adults are in to. This image is good because it gets peoples attention because they want to know what happened to the men in the picture because one is holding a baby, one has lost a tooth. The caption/ slogan is saying that this all happened in Vegas which is funny because of the saying ' what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas'. In the other poster there is a simple picture which shows that this person is laid back and doesn't care about the outcome of his actions. This gives the audience a light heart feel and it would be a nice fun to watch just for a nice day out with the family.

Family:

In these posters they have a strong picture that tells the audience the story, like they have a happy family that go on an adventure or that they have a new member joining an unusual family and their struggles of getting used to each other. This is effective because then they will get a a huge range of audience because then they can relate to the story. These images are effective because they are simple and only give little bits away to the audience about the story, it is the kind of film where you see the poster an you can probably tell what the story is going to be because it is a simple light hearted story but you watch it because of that fact. Also in these kinds of films they are good because even the actors in the film have a relaxed attitude in the film which makes it easy and simple.

Horror:
In these posters they have a disturbing image to shock the audience into looking at the poster. The images are dark and messy to show what the film will be like. The audience to these films are mainly young adult who watch them to get a thrill out of being scared. The films always have a young woman who is the victim of the monster, serial killer etc, this shows that maybe they makers of these films are aiming the film at males because they like that damsel in distress vibe. The person that is going around killing people may not be shown (face wise, they might wear a mask) so in the poster they are hidden from the audience making them, in a way a victim to this thing killing people. The faces that the actors are making show that they are scared an the audience adopt that feeling.

Romance:

In these poster they mainly have a couple all cuddled up together to show their relationship. They are mainly aimed at woman so the woman will be in front to make it more relatable. The poster will be bright and the use of colours will be light to make the feeling of the film lighter. The actors will smiling to show that they are happy or were happy together.

My Coursework ideas

Magazines:

I chose these because the images are good and easy to re-create, but they look amazing and there is a lot that I can do with them. The people seen in the magazine are people that others look up to making the magazine more relatable.

CD covers:

I choses these because they look good and mean a lot. I like them because you as an audience can tell what kind of music will be on the album by the front cover.

Posters:

I chose these because they are artistic and they look good, I think I could make one just like one of these and make it look really good.

Magazine analysis

The masthead is hidden behind the joker's head meaning that it is a well known magazine and doesn't need to have it on display. The main cover line is in a bright green colour which is good because it catches the audience's eye and also because green and purple are The Joker's colours. The main image is tilted so it make the front cover more interesting and eye catching, also it shows that the character they are focusing on is maybe interesting and obscure. The other cover lines focus on another amazing actor which would be good for the audience of this magazine because they would be interested in the industry and the people in it, so a 12 page interview with someone who is has an iconic person in the field of acting would be great for them. The cover lines at the bottom of the page so other stories that might make the audience more interested and buy the magazine. This magazine is targeting people who come under the b-c2 scale because they got into more detail in the interviews and information about the films they involve in their magazine. This is shown through how simple the front cover is, it isn't over loaded with information and they use iconic images from films and the most interesting character to advise the film.
