Case study: Representation of gender through different media texts

That Awkward Moment trailer:
The presentation on the male gender in the film trailer is a stereotypical one. It has been constructed by the mise en scene of what they are wearing, all the young men are wearing casual t-shirts and shirts also Jeans this this the stereotypical clothing for them to wear. Also the mise en scene of their flat has a cheerleader on there wall and other boyish things such as a shark pillow and different signs. The fact that there are 3 young men living together shows that they cannot afford a flat on there own in New York city. Some of the things the men say shows that they are stereotypical men for example 'what the F***, are you serious?' and 'she won't want to talk about xbox' this shows that they are naive and only care about the small things like their xbox, also the swearing shows that are young. Another one that shows that they are young men trying desperately to be a man's man 'I need it my girl just broke up with me', 'what are you Bridget Jones?'.

They use a lot of medium shots to show the characters and how they react to each other, the closeness between the characters. These shots have been used as well because they show the actions that the actors have taken. There is also a montage sequence of the 3 men out of the town which shows that they are young and are care free looking for a good time. The film uses high key lighting and natural lighting at night when they go out. Also when they are in the night clubs the lighting is red which has connotations of love and passion. When the couples meet they use a lot of two shots to show that relationship between them. They use high angles when they are in bed to show the dominance of sex in society now, 'I so wasn't going to do that, I was going to make you wait like 40 days', 'i was going to make you wait too, then I realised... I'm a dude'

The non-diegetic music creates a party atmosphere that goes well with the stereotype of young men going out and partying, it is the sort of music that would be playing in clubs. Also the music is up beat and light hearted which creates a good atmosphere for the audience. The people who are in control of this text is a man named Tom Gormican this shows that the men will be per trade as great people and the women will be sexualised. He will be higher up the socio-economic scales and will be well educated.

The ideologies in this film is that young men are willing to go out and party and have fun until they meet the right girl and they want to settle down with them.

Audience:
Uses and Gratifications:
The audience may watch this trailer for entertainment reasons, getting intrinsic cultural or aesthetic enjoyment, time filler, and maybe sexual arousal because of the young people staring in it. But also you could also watch it for social integration, gaining insight into circumstances of others; social empathy, finding a basis for conversation and social interaction.

Reception theory:
The audience that would take a preferred reading would be someone of a similar age who could relate to the narrative and also the fans of the actors in the film.

The audience that would take the oppositional reading is someone who is really young and wouldn't understand what is going on and couldn't relate to the narrative

The audience that would take the negotiated reading would be someone who is middle aged and can relate to the narrative from their past, they understand what is going on.

Vogue January 2014:
The presentation of this woman Cate Blanchett is professional. This is shown through the mise en scene of what she is wearing, she is wearing a dress that covers her up so she isn't sexualised, the dress is also very vibrant and colourful and well fitted which shows that she is fashionable, this also goes with the magazine because it is a high end fashion magazine. Even her hair looks nice and professional with a side parting. This maybe because her age, she is in her mid forties and she probably wants to look profession and to be taken seriously. The masthead is behind Cate which means that the magazine is well known and she is the main feature. The coverlines are enigma for the audience so they buy the magazine they are all about looking great with the best outfit and accessories. One coverline goes well with what Cate is wearing 'Kick-start you style Bold, Bright looks for the year a head'. I would also say that she has been make to look domestic which is one of the stereotypes of women.

Audience:
Uses and gratifications:
The audience for this magazine will be women between 25-45 years old in the c-a of the socio- economic scale, so they will be reading this magazine for personal identity, entertainment.

Reception theory:
The audience who would take the preferred reading will be a women between 25-45 and in the C-A on the socio-economic scale. Also fashion fans, they will want to read it to find the latest trends and designer pieces. Also fans of Cate.

The audience who would take an oppositional reading would be someone

The audience who would take a negotiated reading is someone who is low down the socio- economic scale, they would under the article but might not know all the designer and the art that is involved. Also men, they will know some information on the matter but they are not really interested.

Miley Cyrus- Wrecking Ball:
Miley Cyrus has really over sexualised herself, this is shown through the mise en scene of what she is wearing, a white vest top and white knickers, then she is shot wearing nothing, also her bright red lipstick connotes love and passion. She also sexualises herself through the actions that she does, she swings on a wrecking ball and licks a sled hammer and walks in a 'come get me' way. This is clearly to attract the male audience to watch her video. But Miley also shows that this is an emotional song through the close ups that show her crying. There are also a lot of mid to long shots of her walking around the room and the wrecking ball taking down the wall, this goes well with the words she is singing. I would say that the song is for the female audience and the video is for the male.

Audience:
Uses and Gratifications:
The audience for the music video be fans of Miley Cyrus and people who like the song, they would be in between E-C on the socio- economic scale and I would say the younger generation of people (16- 28) would listen and watch the video. Also people who grow up with her might watch the video to see what she is doing after her Disney Channel career. I would say that most people would watch this video for entertainment reasons, escapism and time filler but for the male audience maybe sexual arousal.

Reception theory:
The audience who would take a preferred reading would be someone of a similar age so they will relate to what Miley is singing about. Also fans of Miley's work.

The audience who would take an oppositional reading would be someone who doesn't like the song who Miley. Someone who is older and higher on the socio- economic scale. Also young children because they wouldn't understand the song and the meaning.

The audience who would take a negotiated reading would be someone who is a little older and can relate to the words in the song.
